Cloud and Surface Properties from Space During SHEBA: Validation and Analysis |
NOAA/NESDIS, CIMSS, University of Wisconsin, Dept. of Geography, Boston University, CIRES, University of Colorado
jkey@ssec.wisc.eduSatellite retrievals of surface temperature and albedo, cloud amount, phase, optical depth, and temperature, and surface radiative fluxes using the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) are compared to surface-based measurements for the SHEBA year. In particular, new algorithms for estimating the cloudy sky surface temperature and albedo are evaluated. The spatial variability of surface and cloud properties is examined and its effect on aggregate area fluxes is assessed.
