Particles in the atmosphere, which include dust, ash, spores, bacteria, viruses, ammonia, organic material, sea salt crystals, and sulfur and nitrogen compounds, clump together with gases and water in the atmosphere to form aerosols.

Small particles, such as dust, can be easily seen by looking at light rays from a lamp or by looking at the sun shining through a window. When the particles are sufficiently large, their presence is noticed as they scatter and absorb sunlight.

This view from the space shuttle Columbia shows a cross section of the Earth's atmosphere at sunset. The bluish-white layer, in the stratosphere, is thought to contain volcanic debris. The reddish orange layer, in the troposphere, contains smoke from biomass burning.
