Aerosol Activity: Baked Volcano Cookies

Recommended Age:
Intermediate Level (5-8)

Objective:
The student will predict and identify the three types of volcanoes: Cinder Cone, Composite, or Shield.

Safety Precautions:
The small baker's oven and cookie sheet will be hot when taken out of the oven!

Instructional Delivery:
Whole Group or Cooperative Groups

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Using chilled, stiff sugar cookie dough, shape a walnut-sized piece into a volcano and place on a cookie sheet.
  2. Make a small depression in the top with your finger.
  3. Spoon a small amount of strawberry jam or preserves in the depression.
  4. Bake according to the recipe from the sugar cookie dough package or until slightly brown.
  5. Cool completely and enjoy!

Discussion:
After cookies have baked, have the students identify the types of volcanoes their cookies appear to be: Cinder Cone, Composite, or Shield.
