These Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) images of the Alps were captured on July 22, 2000.
The true color image contains the Alps in Switzerland and Austria to the north (top), the Appenine mountains that run the length of Italy in the center, and the islands of Corsica and the larger Sardinia off Italy's west coast. The city of Venice is located on the northeast portion of the boot at the northwest end of the Adriatic Sea. The barrier islands across the Gulf of Venice are barely visible. Trieste is on the bay at the extreme northeast portion of Italy (at the northeast end of the Adriatic Sea), surrounded by a curve of bright cloud. On the west side, Rome is located near the coast approximately across from a point halfway down the island of Corsica.
In the stereo anaglyph image of the same region (viewable with red/blue glasses with the red lens over the left eye), north is to the left.
