Project: Aeolus

The Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) at NASA Langley Research Center has published the dataset for the NASA Aeolus Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) field campaign. The campaign conducted five research flights, totaling 47 flight hours, during April 17-30, 2019 which flew from Palmdale, CA over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Aeolus Cal/Val gathers data from NASA’s Doppler Aerosol WiNd (DAWN) lidar and High Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO) instruments under a wide variety of weather and aerosol conditions, providing valuable information on aerosols and cloud layer vertical distribution and their optical properties. The datasets also provide initial comparisons with the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Atmospheric Dynamics Mission-Aeolus (ADM-Aeolus) satellite level 2 measurements. Additionally, High Definition Sounding System (HDSS) eXpendable Digitial Dropsondes (XDD) were deployed to validate the DAWN and Aeolus wind observations.
