CERES GEO Data Products

SatCORPS CERES-GEO CLOUD Data and Information

Level 2: Instantaneous geo-stationary pixel-level (8-9 km nadir view) cloud and radiation products.

Description: The CERES-GEO (GEO) data set is comprised of cloud micro-physical and radiation properties derived hourly from geostationary satellite imager. The cloud products are retrieved using algorithms originally developed for the NASA Clouds and Radiant Energy Systems (CERES) project [Minnis et al., 2008a; 2011] and adapted for application to other imagers on geostationary [Minnis et al., 2008b] and low Earth-orbit satellites under the umbrella of the Satellite ClOud and Radiation Property retrieval System (SatCORPS, Minnis et al. 2016). The cloud micro-physical and radiation properties from each active geostationary satellite is merged together to create hourly global cloud properties and used to estimate fluxes between CERES instrument measurements to account for the  changing diurnal cycle.   The dataset is arranged as files for each hour and  in netcdf-4 format. The observations are at 2, 3 or 4-km (at nadir) resolution and sub-sampled to 6, 8, or 9-km. NOTE:  The coverage period indicates the time period the satellite is the operational satellite. Operational satellites undergo periodic maintenance or safety maneuvers. During this period other satellites are brought out of storage mode to monitor the region.
