The O3SO2AI data record provides total column ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2) from volcanic plumes, scene reflectivity, and aerosol index (AI), retrieved from the ultraviolet (UV) measurements of DSCOVR EPIC using the Direct Vertical Column Fitting (DVCF) algorithm developed for OMI and OMPS. We have developed and implemented independent soft calibration to maintain the accuracy and consistency of the EPIC earthview radiance measurements. Furthermore we have developed a spatial optimal estimation (SOE) scheme for simultaneous ozone retrieval from multiple instantaneous field of views (IFOVs). The SOE scheme greatly improves the precision of ozone measurements by effectively reduce the ozone artifacts introduced by the band-to-band misregistration resulted from the differences in observation time among the EPIC UV bands. The advanced DVCF algorithm, together with SOE scheme and soft calibration, provides the best estimate of total ozone and other geophysical quantities. Comparisons of total ozone show excellent agreement between EPIC and MERRA-2, and the accuracy of total ozone is better than 2% for the EPIC record.

 

EPIC’s unique vantage point (i.e., the Sun-Earth Lagrange 1 point) allows frequent observations of the entire sun-lit side of the Earth: every 65 minutes during northern hemisphere summer and every 110 minutes during winter. The high frequency, combined with high spatial resolution (~20 km x 20 km), provides unprecedented Earth observations, from sunrise to sunset simultaneously.  The O3SO2AI product is useful for a wide range of investigations, from the dynamics of ozone distributions to the evolution of fresh volcanic plumes.
