Modified SRB Data

The NASA/GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) Surface Radiation Budget project team announces a modified version of the GEWEX Longwave data set. Denoted as version 3.1, this version corrects for a numerical instability issue that was found to affect a small number of 3 hourly grid box TOA outgoing and surface downward fluxes. The approximate number of grid boxes affected ranged from 7-12 (out of 8 hours x 30 days x 44016 total grid boxes) per month. The 3-hourly values in those instances were significantly in error but had little effect on daily, 3-hourly monthly and monthly averaged values. Users analyzing 3 hourly fields are advised to obtain the new data set.

The NASA/GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) team and the NASA Langley Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) announce the release of the Langley Parameterized Longwave Algorithm (LPLA) and the Langley Parameterized Shortwave Algorithm (LPSA) products.

 

The algorithm set Quality-Check Longwave Algorithm (QCLW) and Quality-Check Shortwave Algorithm (QCSW) products were renamed under a directive from the GEWEX Radiation Panel (now the GEWEX Data and Assessment Panel - GDAP) received at the 2011 meeting. The panel stressed the need for algorithm names to more accurately represent the parameterized character of these algorithms. In accordance with that directive, these algorithms were renamed the Langley Parameterized Longwave Algorithm (LPLA) and the Langley Parameterized Shortwave Algorithm (LPSA), respectively. The formal GEWEX approved algorithms entitled the GEWEX SW (SW) and GEWEX LW (LW) remain at their current versions 3.0 and 3.1 respectively. Users are advised to use the most recent version of the data sets.

 

Product Contents and Nomenclature:

  • The SRB Rel 3.0 LPLA DAILY product contains daily average global fields of three longwave (LW) surface radiative parameters. (Formerly SRB Rel 3.0 QCLW DAILY)
  • The SRB Rel 3.0 LPLA MONTHLY product contains monthly average global fields of three longwave (LW) surface radiative parameters and three input meteorological parameters. (Formerly SRB Rel 3.0 QCLW MONTHLY)
  • The SRB Rel 3.0 LPLA 3HRLY product contains global fields of instantaneous 3-hourly values, daily average global fields of three longwave (LW) surface radiative parameters. (Formerly SRB Rel 3.0 QCLW 3HRLY)
  • The SRB Rel 3.0 LPLA 3HRLY MONTHLY product contains monthly average/3-hourly (also called diurnally-resolved monthly average) global fields of three longwave (LW) surface radiative parameters. (Formerly SRB Rel 3.0 QCLW 3HRLY MONTHLY)

The LPLA and LPSA products are available for the period of July 1983 to December 2007 in both binary and NetCDF formats and are accessible via SRB Data and Information.
